Trent R. Hein is Co-CEO at Rule4. Trent is recognized as one of the world’s leading experts in infrastructure cybersecurity and automation. Prior to Rule4, he co-founded and served as CTO of XOR Inc. (now part of FICO) for more than a decade before co-founding and serving as Co-CEO of AppliedTrust, a provider of IT security and network/systems infrastructure consulting services. Under Trent’s leadership, AppliedTrust was recognized on the Inc. 5000 list multiple years, and received the Colorado Technology Association’s coveted Apex Award.
A serial entrepreneur, Trent is passionate about building businesses that have a positive impact on employees, clients, the community, and the world. He champions practical cybersecurity and automation, and bedrock to all his ventures is helping clients maximize their IT investment in the areas of security, performance, and availability. He continues these traditions at Rule4.
Trent’s history with and commitment to the Colorado technology community runs deep, and he hosts the DevOps Boulder meetup, now well over 1,000 members. He is also passionate about the importance of giving back to the community outside of IT, and he is currently on the board of Harvest of Hope Pantry and has previously served on the board of directors of the Humane Society of Boulder Valley.
Trent holds a B.S. in computer science (CS) from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he subsequently pursued a Ph.D. in CS specializing in distributed systems and AI. In 2004, the university awarded him the Kalpana Chawla Outstanding Recent Alumni Award, one of the most prestigious honors given by the university. He also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the USENIX Association for his work with the University of California at Berkeley’s Computer Systems Research Group (CSRG), and he was the third engineer hired at Berkeley Software Design Inc. (BSDI). He is a coauthor of the Unix and Linux System Administration Handbook, currently in its fifth edition. Trent has an Erdös number of 3.
Outside of his technological pursuits, Trent loves hiking, skiing, fly-fishing, camping, bluegrass, dogs, and the Oxford comma.
